Chase away the winter blues with this Tony Award Winning Comedy

Chase away the winter blues with Christopher Durang’s hilarious and endearing comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, now playing at The Public Theatre Jan 23 – Feb 1.

Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, this hit Broadway comedy was hailed as “hugely entertaining” (USA today), and “deliriously funny” (NY Times). Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia (named after Chekhov characters by their hyper-educated parents) live uneventful lives until their self-absorbed movie-star sister Masha returns home with her 20-something boy-toy Spike in tow to shake things up. Add to the mix, a wanna-be young actress named Nina, a housekeeper named Cassandra who sees into the future, and a delightful rant about the joy of life before cell phones, and this is one family reunion you’ll want to attend! Contains some adult language and one hot guy in his underwear.

Awarded the “Best Theatre in Maine” for the second year in a row by Down East Magazine’s readers’ poll, The Public Theatre continues its reputation for producing high quality professional theatre with a stellar cast starring Jonathan Hadley as Vanya. Jonathan most recently appeared on Broadway as Bob Crewe in Jersey Boys, a role he then played for six years on the First National Tour. Other National Tours include Into The Woods with Cleo Laine, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Donny Osmond and Fiddler on the Roof with Theo Bikel. Vanya’s movie star sister Masha will be played by Robyne Parrish. Robyne is currently the Artistic Director of North Carolina’s Gilbert Theatre and was most recently seen at The Public Theatre as Ana in The Book Club Play. Playing her boy-toy Spike will be Jarid Faubel. Currently spending time in the gym to live up to the pressure of being labeled “hot” by the Public Theatre’s poster, Jarid can also be found in X-Men: First Class and Jack Reacher with Tom Cruise. Jarid also recently appeared this summer at MSMT in Seven Brides for Seven BrothersPlaying Sonia the adopted sister of Vanya and Masha, will be Janet Mitchko. Janet most recently appeared as Margie in The Public Theatre’s production of Good People. New to Public Theatre audiences will be New York actress Jamie Rezanour as the wacky Latina housekeeper Cassandra and Maine native Anna Doyle as Nina.  Anna is currently a senior at Colby College and appeared this past summer at The Theater at Monmouth. The family home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania where the play takes place will be designed by Judy Staicer. Lighting will be by Bart Garvey and costumes, including an appearance by Snow White, 2 dwarves, Prince Charming and Maggie Smith on Oscar night will be designed by Jonna Klaiber.

The Public Theatre continues its new PLAY PAL program for people who love going to the theatre but can’t always find someone to go with. The Public Theatre will connect solo theatre-goers with other solo theatre-lovers when they join the Play Pal club and attend the 3pm Saturday matinee performance.   PLAY PALS will be seated together and identified to each other, making it easy to make a new friend at The Public Theatre. PLAY PALS are also given a coupon for a free concession item, encouraging them to meet and mingle with other theatre-lovers during intermission. A “getting to know you” game card is also available for adventuresome PLAY PAL members, offering a chance to win fun prizes. Membership in The Public Theatre’s PLAY PAL program is free with the only requirement being that you are a solo-theatre-goer. Members can choose to see one play or every play in the season and the shows you attend are up to you.  Who knows, you might find a new friend sitting in the seat right next to you.

Performances of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike are Jan 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31 and Feb 1. Thurs/Fri 7:30pm, Sat 8pm, Sun 2pm, with an added matinee on Jan 31 @3pm.  Adults $20, Group Rate (10+) $16.  For tickets, call The Public Theatre Box Office at 782-3200 or visit www.thepublictheatre.org The Public Theatre is located at 31 Maple St. in downtown Lewiston.
