"Doubt" Is A Certain Success At The Public Theatre!

December 17, 2007

Winner of 24 major awards including the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for BEST PLAY, Doubt, a parable makes its Maine debut at The Public Theatre, Jan 25 – Feb 3. "We're very excited to be the first theatre producing this play in Maine", says Artistic Director Christopher Schario. "We've been wanting to do this show since we saw it in New York, but because of its long-run on Broadway, and negotiations for the film version starring Meryl Streep, the rights for all professional productions were not released until recently. The "buzz" and amazing reviews around this show have generated a lot of interest in seeing it, and Doubt, a parable will be the most produced play in the United States this season".

A gripping story of suspicion, as well as a compelling parable for our current 'courtroom culture', Doubt revolves around an accusation of sexual misconduct in a Catholic school in 1964. When a stern nun’s suspicions are weighed against the word of a well-liked priest, how does one determine the truth? "I have not the slightest proof of anything, but I have my certainty," states Sister Aloysius. "The great thing about this play", says Schario, "is the way it keeps you switching sides, changing who you believe. I guarantee you'll leave the theatre debating and disagreeing about the guilt or innocence of the characters, as well the dangers of over-simplification in our current society". There's a good reason why this play is called, 'the richest and most talked about piece of theatre in years'.

Playwright John Patrick Shanley says, "I wanted to write a play embracing doubt - about the merit of doubt as opposed to certainty. Such a project runs counter to the human 'attraction to absolutes'. People want to get everything all settled. But if you want to understand anything about the human experience, it’s not about 'the verdict.' How the two adversaries handle their clash is the important thing."

Starring in this production will be Kathy Lichter as Sister Aloysius, Peter Crosby as Father Flynn, Catelin Wilcox as Sister James and Teri Shepard as Mrs. Muller. All professional actors from New York and Los Angeles, director Christopher Schario promises this exciting cast is up to the task of meeting the audience's high expectations. Creating the environment of the 1964 Bronx Catholic School in which this clash of wills takes place will be set designer Dan Bilodeau, lighting designer Jamie Grant, and costume designer Kris Hall.

Doubt, a parable will be performed at The Public Theatre, Lewiston/Auburn's Professional Theatre, Jan 25, 26, 27, 31, Feb 1, 2, 3. Performance times are Thurs at 7pm, Fri and Sat at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. Adults $18, Sr/Stu $16, Group Rate (10+) $14. For tickets call The Public Theatre Box Office at 782-3200.
