The Public Theatre begins its professional Summer Theatre Training Program for young actors
July 19, 2010
The Public Theatre has officially begun its first professional theatre training program for young actors. Featuring an auditioned and hand-picked group of 15 students ranging from ages 10 to 15, these young thespians travel daily to The Public Theatre from as far away as Scarborough, Jay, and Hartford to participate in this exciting program taught by theatre professionals.
Daily classes include stage combat, voice and speech, and singing as well as a master acting class where they are taught the fundamentals of acting. The Public Theatre’s summer intensive program offers professional standards and insights, and is a unique alternative to other “drama camps”.

Public Theatre Artistic Director Christopher Schario states, “We’re not looking to reinforce old habits by having the single focus to be the putting on of a play. Instead, we’re hoping to focus on the process of acting and develop the skills necessary to become a good actor. Our goal is to build each person’s skills in concentration and talking and listening and give the students a new consciousness of themselves as an instrument. Although there will ultimately be a performance piece, the goal of the piece is to showcase the skills they are learning, and reinforce a new way to think about performing.”
The final presentation will be based on a series of entertaining stories called Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl, and will include a few songs as well as some of the exciting stage combat moves they are learning. The presentation is free of charge and open to the public, and will beheld on Friday July 23 at 6pm at The Public Theatre.
Schario says, “It’s a wonderful sight to see these very talented and passionate young students catching fire and discovering a new way to think about theatre and themselves.” For more information call The Public Theatre at 782-3200.
