A Delightful Family Comedy at The Public Theatre!

May 2, 2011

The Public Theatre, Lewiston/Auburn’s Professional Theatre, continues the success of its 20th anniversary season with BEAU JEST, a delightful romantic comedy about finding a boyfriend your parents will approve of, May 6 - 15.

Sarah is a nice Jewish girl with a problem: her parents want her to marry a nice Jewish boy, but she’s in love with a Protestant man named Chris Kringle. To put a stop to her parents well-intended meddling, she pretends to stop dating Chris and hires an actor to play the man of her mother’s dreams. But when her parents fall in love with her “new beau”, can she resist doing the same? Imagine My Big Fat Greek Wedding meets The Wedding Date with a little Fiddler on the Roof thrown in, and you've got this delightful romantic family comedy.

“The great thing about Beau Jest is that everyone can relate the dilemma of trying to please their parents” says director Janet Mitchko. “Sarah is in a phase of young adulthood where pleasing her parents is in conflict with what she wants for herself. Over the course of the play Sarah learns to transform her relationship with her parents from child-parent to adult-adult. It’s an entertaining and humorous story that offers us a valuable lesson about the importance of leading an authentic life.”

Starring as Sarah, the eager-to-please daughter is New York actress Sarah Corey in her Public Theatre debut. Also new to TPT audiences is Philadelphia based actor Damon Bonetti as her actor-for-hire boyfriend Bob, and actor Brian White as her gentile boyfriend Chris Kringle. TPT alumni Bill Van Horn (Over the River and through the Woods) and Marina Re (Rumors, Deathtrap, Broadway Bound) return to TPT as Sarah’s parents Abe and Miriam Goldman. Also returning to The Public Theatre after his recent role as the Wolf in this season’s production of The Three Little Pigs will be actor Doug Shapiro in the role of Sarah’s suspicious brother Joel.

The set design featuring a single girl’s Chicago apartment is designed by Amber Callahan, lighting by Bart Garvey, and costumes by Kathleen Brown. Rabbi Hillel Katzir will be helping as technical advisor.

Beau Jest runs May 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15. Thurs/Fri 7:30pm, Sat at 8pm, Sun 2pm, with an ADDED SATURDAY MATINEE performance on May 14 at 2pm. For tickets call 782-3200. The Public Theatre is located at 31 Maple St, downtown Lewiston. Adults$18, Sr $16, Youth (under 18) $5. Group rates (10+) are also available.
