The Public Theatre voted "Best Theatre Company" for the FOURTH time!

April 27, 2007

The Public Theatre, Lewiston-Auburn's Professional Theatre, was recently voted "Best Theatre Company" in the 2007 Portland Phoenix Readers' Poll. This is the fourth time this honor has gone to The Public Theatre. "It's really an affirmation of our standing among the professional theatres in Northern New England and an example of the broad reach the theatre has in Southern and Central Maine," says Public Theatre artistic director, Christopher Schario. Several years ago a reviewer wrote that The Public Theatre was getting the attention of "Northward looking Portlanders", and this award is proving this statement to be true. We take a tremendous amount of pride in the artistic excellence of our productions, and the deep and consistent support we get from Lewiston/Auburn and beyond. Being voted "Best Theatre Company" again, means that we are reaching a far wider audience than many people may have imagined."

Currently in it's 16th season The Public Theatre's remarkable growth continues. Attendance so far this year is averaging nearly 95%. The theatre's Capital Campaign has raised over half of its $2.4 million goal. The first two phases of renovation, including a two-story addition, new restrooms, a breathtaking new lobby, and a new sign and fresh coat of paint for the side of the building have been completed. If all goes as planned, the rest of the project, which includes a total renovation of the auditorium, stage, shops, and dressing rooms, will be finished in about two years.

The Public Theatre is one of five Equity theatres in Maine and boasts the lowest ticket prices for any Equity theatre in the state with a top ticket price of only $16. Hiring only professional actors, mostly from New York, Los Angeles and Boston, TPT presents a wide selection of first-rate professional performances from October through May. For more information about The Public Theatre, tickets for their upcoming production of Enchanted April playing May 4-13, or subscription information for their upcoming 2007-08 season currently on sale, call the box office at 207-782-3200 or visit their website at www.thepublictheatre.org.
